Chapter 05 · Strategy

Token strategy: keep one token slow, keep three tokens fast.

A token is safe on a starred square, exposed on the shared path, and powerful once it climbs the home column. The cheapest edge in ludo is balancing those three states at once.

The balancing rule, in one sentence

Hold one token back on a starred safe square close to your home column. Bring the other three out one at a time. Finish the leading token before you spread again.

Why one slow token

A token on a starred safe square cannot be captured. It is your cheapest insurance policy. If your three advancing tokens are all sent home in a single turn, the slow token is already inside your home column, three to five squares from the centre.

That is enough distance to need only a few more turns. You do not have to roll a six to reach the centre from inside the home column.

Why three fast tokens

Three advancing tokens put pressure on three of the four colours at once. If a fast token is cut, two still march. If two are cut, one still climbs. Spreading wide beats stacking one token and hoping.

Stacking on one square, even a starred safe square, invites a single capture that wipes your lead.

Three rules regular winners follow

Rule
What it does
When it fails
One in, one out
Sends the second token only after the first has cleared opponents' home columns
Fails if opponents refuse to engage
Avoid double stacking
Two of your tokens on one starred square are still one capture away from losing both
Fails when the house rule allows capture on safe squares
Finish the leader
The closer a token is to the centre triangle, the smaller the chance anyone can capture it
Fails if a six-streak eats your turns
Keep one slow token
One parked token on a starred safe square inside the home-column band
Fails if there is no safe square inside the band

Where this comes from

Standard ludo rules on safe squares, capture eligibility, and home-column entry come from the public rule cards on the major Indian platforms and from the long-form rules published by the National Ludo Federation. The balancing strategy is observational: log the finishers from a hundred matches and the same shape keeps showing up. One token inside the home column, three tokens on the shared path, no doubles on a starred square.

Read your platform's rule card before your first stake. Some Quick formats soften the safe-square rule; some 1v1 formats skip the bonus roll on capture. House rules change the math, not the principle.
